Paolo is known for his acclaimed work with such mainstream publishers as Marvel Comics (Captain Marvel, Darkhawk), DC Comics (Teen Titans, Red Hood/Arsenal), Aspen Comics, Zenescope Entertainment, Coffin Comics, and more.

He's currently producing his own series Oniba: Swords of the Demon with Aspen Comics and in meantime he's collaborating with video-games companies such as Warner bros Games and Arc System.

Comic book art is first stated by the Penciller. The penciller does not usually create the finished art. The extent to which the pencilled pages resemble the final, inked version varies depending on the artist.

The inker takes an artist's pencils and goes over them in ink, turning the image into a finished piece of work. The dark ink lines makes the art jump off the page and adds depth and dimension.
The colorist helps the comic book to become a finished piece of art, and is an artist in their own right, needing very different kinds of skills than what the penciller and inker need.

Our course structure
You study remotely with one online meeting and one review of assigments a week so you can plan your education in the most covinient way.
9 online meetings with lecture material and 9 online reviews
Course format
9 weeks of the main lectures and 3 weeks for a graduation project.

Week 1: Intro to the sketching
  • Comics, introductory lecture: what are comics, how do they differ, who makes comics, what media is usually used to create comics
  • Sketches, as the basis of composition in a frame: types of sketching, visual hierarchy tools in illustration
  • Acquaintance with the main tools that modern comic book artists use for sketching
Week 2: Character in a comic book
  • Character in the comic book: uniqueness, recognition, and simplicity with examples
  • Basic proportions of a human body and face (only what comes in handy for styling in the comic books). Examples of characters proportions from popular franchises
  • Creating a unique character sheet: references analysis in use of creation
  • A few words about what else affects the character's visual representation in the comics: the target audience, the world and the environment around a character, his tastes, preferences, and behavior in a frame, the artist's style
Week 3: Hands and feet, the problematic parts of the body for newbies
  • Hand: simple shapes, proportions and modularity, palm plastic in the comic styling

  • How to work using photo-refs from real life
  • Getting into creating a 3D dummy of a character using Clip Studio and Easy Poser, using it as a help to draw body parts from different angles
Week 4: Starting to work with a comic page, paneling, and doodles
  • Hand: simple shapes, proportions and modularity, palm plastic in the comic styling
  • Foot: simple shapes, proportions and modularity, palm plastic in the comic styling
  • How to work using photo-refs from real life
  • Getting into creating a 3D dummy of a character using Clip Studio and Easy Poser, using it as a help to draw body parts from different angles
Week 5: A clean linework, work with background, and foreground in a comic book
  • Hand: simple shapes, proportions and modularity, palm plastic in the comic styling
  • Foot: simple shapes, proportions and modularity, palm plastic in the comic styling
  • How to work using photo-refs from real life
  • Getting into creating a 3D dummy of a character using Clip Studio and Easy Poser, using it as a help to draw body parts from different angles
Week 6: Tone and coloring
